Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Speech
14 1/2 “ H x 10 “ W x 3 1/2” D
Gourd Type: Martin

Freedom of speech is the inspiration for this mask.  The act of speaking out can cause a black eye from time to time.  In the area that I live, many of the local plant employees have been on strike for almost a year.  This mask is a tribute to the families struggling due to corporate firms not looking out for their workers.
Threats of moving industry overseas is breaking America.

Gourd Type: California

A large California gourd is split to create two parts from one; symbolizing the close bond of the two cats.

The piece became a tribute to a beloved lost Sphynx boy and to all of the unique toys and things in their life.

In Memorial to Rex Avery - the Minter Piece - Commissioned by K. Fikes

Through the research involved in this piece I learned how Mr. Avery touched so many.
My heart goes to his family for their loss of such a wonderful man. I was honored to be commissioned to create a piece the family can pass on to celebrate his story and life.

:: Asian Journey ::

Asian Journey

I was commissioned by an individual to touch on the life of their dear friend who was retiring from nursing. She meet her husband in Vietnam while she was a trama nurse.

Asian art has a special meaning to her. This being my first Asian style piece, it also has special meaning to me. I found it quite ironic that her retiring date is the same time I started my gourd art - Valentines Day -.
Paths cross in mysterious ways.

Beaded Rim - k - Commission for Williams

Beaded Rim
Williams collection
7"H x8"W x 8"D

cut martin gourd

The design was inspired from Indian vessels used 500 -1000 years ago.
The band around appears to interlock by the heavy carving.  A series of paint then stain was used to achieve depth.  The beaded edge draws
interest by catching light beautifully.

Chief Spirit - private collection

Chief Spirit
32" H x 12 1/2"W x 6"D

This Chief is carved from driftwood recovered from South AL, along the Tombigbee Waterway.  I saw the image before I began carving with knives, chisels, and gouges.
His image became more evident with fine tuning with Dremel carving.  I still carve on
this piece from time to time.  I love the depth of his feathered headdress.  The curves of the
driftwood just lent itself so perfectly for flowing feathers, and his long hair.

Bailey's Love

Baily’s Love
18"w x 14"H x 18" D

The piece created for the Baily’s has become one of my favorites.  They invited me into their home and I was aware of their commitment to our Creator and each other.  The leather patches bound by sinew symbolize the bond they share.  The irregular shapes and altered stitches symbolize the change of direction life events caused and yet they have held together.  The serene scenes of nature are environments they both share a love for.  The Baily’s are very special to me and I enjoyed being able to tribute their love.

Life and people are not perfect, but our Creator is.
The Wise Commission

Neck of Woods

Neck of the Woods (Tree-Houses)

13"H x 15"W x 9"D - Hybrid gourd

is the 5th design in the series.  Originally the design was one I envisioned to be for a bird feeder.  The design now serves as a serene scene of peaceful woods as a sculptural piece.  I love my neck of the woods here in rural Alabama.  The tree houses hold a close place to my heart.

Endangered Bengal Tiger - Dubar Collection

 Bengal tiger
20"H x 10 1/2"W
x 10 1/2"
Large bottle-neck and martin base

The endangered Bengal Tiger was carved, wood-burned, and stained with gourd master dyes.  The flowing cliffs, with grasses and bonsai bushes are the setting for the prowling powerful loner.  The Bengal is one of the 5 species of tiger still in existence.
A Lesser Kestrel Falcon, also endangered, takes flight in a manner of leading the Tiger to another path.  The base is cut out and fashioned to resemble roots and cherry blossoms.  This is the first piece I utilized layering carved pieces to add additional depth.

Commission piece for a handle and sheath for the WW2 bayonet, a steel blade made to be attached at the muzzle end of a shoulder
arm and used in hand to hand combat .   The handle is of deer antler with a carved turtle on the end.  This symbolizes to be slow to draw
in anger. The sheath of saddle grade leather layered with a thin skin of leather to allow the grain of the underneath to be visable.
A saddle stitch was done with loop on the back to string on a belt.  The display stand is of pine knot and cradels an antler with carved Hopi Indian designs.  The Bayonet knife and the stand became two works of art that can stand alone but belong together.
